News&features - June 23, 2005

I disagree with a lot that the SNR puts out, but this article is why I am glad they are around.
My town.
My community.
My world.
This is what we have to deal with and why we should be aware of what's going on around us.

Here's a graphic that shows just where the gentrification battle lines are drawn.
Note that no gang suppression is happening in the "good part" of town.
The dark grey areas are where we are to not have tattoos, shaved heads, or vintage cars.
The light grey areas are where it's safe to sip lattes and wear hip packs.

BC,AD versus BCE,CE - World History & Geography

A few weeks ago I saw this BCE garbage being used and became increasingly annoyed when, much like Rachel Ray explaining EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) , the tour patiently explained to us that BCE meant "before the common era".
I suspected that this was some politically correct thinking to blame and I was correct.
Some of the teachers at this link make some good points, is it truly something common?
Screw all that. It's BC and AD, if you dont like it, move to France.

ZU33 - Lords of Chaos

The mid 90s were a time for a lot of musical movements, will the Vegan Straight Edge be given this same treatment someday?
ACC Studios: News: "It is 2021, tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of 9/11 It is up to an underground group of bio-mechanically enhanced conservatives led by Sean Hannity, G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North to thwart Ambassador Usama Bin Laden's plans to nuke New York City ...And wake the world from an Orwellian nightmare of United Nations- dominated ultra-liberalism."
Press Briefing by Scott McClellan: "Q Scott, an article in the American Conservative by Philip Giraldi, former intelligence operative, indicated the Vice President has revamped strategy towards Iran where there are now 300 to 400 missiles targeted various sites in Iran, including tactical nuclear missiles, especially aimed at the Iranian nuclear capabilities. These are now, according to Giraldi, also under command of the theater commander.

Given our problems with Iran and the fact that now that they have decided to go for the full cycle of their peaceful nuclear program, might we be anxious that if there were a terrorist incident here in the United States in any way connected to Iran, that there might be a knee-jerk reaction of utilizing this hair-trigger against the Iranians?

MR. McCLELLAN: One, I appreciate your question. I'm not going to get into accepting anything that you alleged in your comments. I'm not going to get into discussing matters relating to national security of that nature.

Two, in terms of Iran, Iran made some commitments to suspend their uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities. We expect them to abide by that commitment. If they were to begin those activities again, they would be violating the commitment they made under the Paris agreement with the Europeans. And we have made it very clear that Iran has a history of hiding their nuclear activities from the international community. That's why it's so important that you have some confidence-building measures, or objective guarantees in place, so that they show the international community that their nuclear program is not being used to develop weapons, or that they're not developing weapons under the cover of a civilian program.

And if Iran is going to violate their agreements, then we would, obviously, be looking at discussing with the Europeans, who have also committed to doing so, looking at going to the Security Council.

Go ahead."

One final down one more to go -and that's just for this semester!
I have neglected "actual" blogging for a while and that's too bad, but the beauty of the right click "blog this" plug in is that any good/interesting/funny links won't get lost.
I think I might just update those entries to make them all just a row of links.
I just finished my poli sci class, and am sad to see it end.
No rancorous shouting matches, no invective laced diatribes, no ad hominem attacks... it's hard for me to get used to that sort of an environment when here (well not this blog but online) the "battlefield" is much more harsh.
I told my professor that I wasn't used to this sort of setting and I must say, I'm looking forward to more of the same whether its in my day to day activities or online in e-debate.
A product of my environment, what is my environment?
I grew up in the 70's in San Francisco, I remember the communists rallying on the corners, remember "las huelgas" remember my mother crying about losing her mother and my grandmother. Then moving on towards a music subculture where anything to the right of a socialist = blasphemy. Going to shows and hearing year after year of singers decrying everything having to do with" Amerikkka". I remember hearing in Berkeley, long before it was being mocked and derided on talk radio - the terms "wimmin" "patriarchy" "hegemony" and this was used to describe Democrats!

Now I'm in a netherworld, just like this blog.
Neither a "hardcore kid" nor a "responsible citizen".

I still enjoy the music, and the opposing politics don't ipset me, but I'm weary of talk.
I'm weary of people stating one thing and doing the other and find that I respect my political "opponents" more so than the apathetic individuals of all scenes.
Regular life or in the pit.
So again, I have to say that I will miss this class, I was pushed to do a lot of work and to marshall my thoughts at a level that I haven't done so up until this point.
I hope that I am involved in a class or group like this again.
I much rather battles of ideas over flame wars.
Thank you Heather!

- enemy combatants under the Geneva convention, in order to meet the requirements of protection.. must have an identifiable uniform or markings to differentiate them from civilians and I quote:
"combatants must be clearly distinguishable from civilians."

- the right to counsel is something we as Citizens enjoy here, but nowhere in the constitution does it guarantee it for foreigners.

- the Geneva convention(s) are between nation-states. Dealing with nebulous entities like Al Quaeda, where the members are a loosely knit cadre of extremists beholden to noone, exempts them from this treatment.

- I am not advocating brutalization or inhumane torture.

There's a reason why groups like the National Front and Stormfront are against abortion and believe that the 'white race' is slowly dying (in numbers)
When people are so selfish that they view their own children as a burden, then I'm glad that they avoid parenthood at all costs, but I really want to avoid these sorts of people period.
This is the same sort of selfishness that capitalists like me are accused of, but compared to these guys, even the most die hard Ayn Rand fan is a bundle of love!

How does technology affect us as individuals?
Is legislation keeping up or falling behind technology?
Is it imperative that those people making these legislative decisions be informed or not?

Have you ever done the following:
- made a tape of a CD
- burned a CD for a friend
- shared a mixtape
- recorded a sports event from TV?
- used a copy of software that you didn't pay for?
- used a trial version of something and never uninstalled it after the trial period?

Do you know which are illegal and which are legal?
You own your computer, do you own the programs on it or are you using them with permission from the manufacturer?

The importance of technology has been a part of public policy since the 1787 to present day America.
1787: U.S. Constitution

According to Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution, "the Congress shall have power . . . to promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries."

Since then, the road to copyright protection has progressed with the times although sometimes the cart and buggy have switched positions and morphed into a hybrid technology automobile.
Copyright protections are just one area in which public policy affects citizens.

Other technologies that we aren't as aware of but still do affect us include stem cell technology, cloning, and biotechnology.
Technology isn't just telecommunications, although telecommunications technology affects us all in the most obvious ways.
Most americans have access to phones, tvs, cellular phones, internet technology and computers
With every new technology comes new legal issues.

- The case of Betamax Technology ruled that the making of individual copies of complete television shows for personal use does not constitute copyright infringement, but is fair use.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Corp._v._Universal_City_Studios

- Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act did just what it's name suggests, it extended the duration of copyright protection.
http://www.keytlaw.com/Copyrights/sonybono.htm

- The DMCA http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/iclp/dmca1.htm
Makes it a crime to circumvent anti-piracy measures built into most commercial software.

Outlaws the manufacture, sale, or distribution of code-cracking devices used to illegally copy software.

Does permit the cracking of copyright protection devices, however, to conduct encryption research, assess product interoperability, and test computer security systems.

Provides exemptions from anti-circumvention provisions for nonprofit libraries, archives, and educational institutions under certain circumstances.

In general, limits Internet service providers from copyright infringement liability for simply transmitting information over the Internet.

Service providers, however, are expected to remove material from users' web sites that appears to constitute copyright infringement.

Limits liability of nonprofit institutions of higher education -- when they serve as online service providers and under certain circumstances -- for copyright infringement by faculty members or graduate students.

Requires that "webcasters" pay licensing fees to record companies.

Requires that the Register of Copyrights, after consultation with relevant parties, submit to Congress recommendations regarding how to promote distance education through digital technologies while "maintaining an appropriate balance between the rights of copyright owners and the needs of users."

States explicitly that "[n]othing in this section shall affect rights, remedies, limitations, or defenses to copyright infringement, including fair use..."

The PITAC report addresses issues that affect us all. Much like the California 2025, PITACs report to the President offers up suggestions on how we as a nation can remain a vital force in technology in a world becoming increasingly smaller thanks to telecommunications. Just recently, a 9 year old girl from Pakistan became a Microsoft Certified Professional. If a girl from a third world country can achieve this, what do we have to do in order to get our youth to take that initiative? Can the government do it on it's own?

Apple - iTunes

Itunes for windows, annoying and awesome - my quick review:

Annoying

-the bulk - its now doubled in size?
-memory usage - ugh 34 mbs?!
-annoying arrows that point are links towards the itunes store where users can I guess - BUY mp3s (?!?) ok. I have the mp3s on my computer from my own CDs or shared from friends. Annoying !

Improving

-It loads up faster - thanks!
-Podcasting - although the lack of conservative podcasts makes me raise my eyebrow again - I have no proof of left leaning bias, but a quick search in the podcast section finds 5 conservative podcasts and a search for 'liberal' finds 11.
Hmmm maybe this should have been included in that other list!

I wonder if it's a coincidence that the new itunes came out after this one guy had a great success with selling podcast subscriptions.
